Interview with Angelia of On Gossamer Wings

Today's FAEteam interview is with Angelia Doyle of On Gossamer Wings, from Hurst, Texas.

Fun Fact: I LOVE stripey socks and wind chimes!
What is your workspace like? Big! We just moved into a new home, and I have the workspace of my dreams. I’m still in the “settling in” phase, so not everything has found it’s permanent home just yet.
What makes you happy? My family… and stripey socks!

FANTASY
What sparked your love for fantasy? How old were you?
I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t in love with fantasy: the stories, the costumes, the settings….everything about it!
What do you like most about the fantasy genre? The fact that anything is possible.
What is your favorite fantasy book/movie/series? Fairy Tale, Labyrinth, Hook, Peter Pan, Legend, Willow, The Dark Crystal, A Midsummers Night's Dream, Princess Bride, and SO many more!

ART
Are you formally trained or self-taught?
I’m self-taught at making fairy wings, but I was a Fine Arts major in college.
Any artists who inspire you? Amy Brown, Molly Harrison, Linda Ravenscroft, Renee Biertempfel, Nene Thomas…and many, many more!
What do you hope people will feel when they see your art? I hope they feel happiness! One of the best compliments that I can receive is a great, big smile!

ETSY AND SELLING
What advice would you give to other artists/Etsy sellers?
Never give up! Always continue to fine tune your store, and good photography is worth its weight in gold!
How do you handle criticism? Depends upon how it is given. If someone is trying to be constructive, then I listen with an open mind and try to determine if what’s being said is truly in my best interest.
What motivates you? New designs! I dream of new designs almost every night, and I can’t wait to see them come to life!

  2. Is the hat you're wearing your own creation? I have a strange craving to have more and fancier hats than I could have any practical excuse for. :)

  3. Those red and black wings are so amazing!! Being a gypsy, I have never worn fairy wings...those would make me trade in my caravan for flight lessons!
    Great job, Merily.

  4. The spider wings are neat.
I hate spiders. If spiders had wings I'd never go outside.

Can you imagine walking into a flock of flying spiders?

Why, K, why?! The problem is I CAN imagine that, and it is horrible. *shudder*

  7. These wings make my faerie heart flutter! And what a beautiful faerie wing maker. I suspect, Angelia, there are gossamer wings discretely hidden out of view in that head shot!

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for your incredibly kind words!! It really means a lot to me!

To answer some of your questions:

Helen - Sadly, no, I didn't make the hat. I was trying it on in a booth at a local renaissance faire. I kick myself because I didn't buy it!

K - You just named my worst nightmare!

Mermaiden - After seeing other people's studios, I'm realizing that mine isn't all that huge, but it's *so* much better than what I had before! In our last home, I had a space roughly 6' x 6'. Now, my room is 30' x 10'...a *much* better space to create!

Thank you, again, for receiving this interview so warmly! I apologize for not being terribly active on the boards. Other than trying to run my business, I also take care of my very active 16-month old boy!

I hope everyone is having a beautiful spring! We're enjoying our last few days before the heat sets in!
